Historical and Philatelic Context:
During the Spanish Civil War, due to the severe shortage of official small change and fractional currency, many local anti-fascist municipal councils (Consejos Municipales) in the Republican zone issued their own local stamps and currency notes to facilitate local trade and cover municipal postal/fiscal needs.
Vinebre issued a beautifully designed bi-colored series depicting local scenery and agricultural heritage. Due to the manual two-step printing process required for bi-colored stamps (where the frame and the central vignette are printed separately), a very limited number of sheets were fed into the press upside down, resulting in this famous and spectacular inverted center variety (centro invertido).
Condition & Technical Characteristics:
-
Printing: Bi-colored typography on local paper.
-
Variety: Full inverted centers clearly visible across all four values.
-
State of Conservation: Superb Mint Never Hinged (MNH / **** ) condition. Fresh, original gum, vibrant colors, and excellent preservation. Unused local stamps of this caliber and in this pristine state are exceptionally hard to find.
-
Centering: Very fine centering for local wartime emergency printings, which were often plagued by alignment issues.
Why this set belongs in your collection:
While standard Vinebre local stamps are already highly prized additions to any Spanish Civil War collection, a complete set of all four values with inverted centers is a true exhibition-class item. It represents both a poignant piece of Catalan local history during the conflict and a classic philatelic error of the highest visual appeal.
